Sign Permits & Ordinances
NOTICE: In March 2016, the Board of Commissioners voted to revise the requirements for freestanding signs in Pickens County. Please be aware of the following:
- For proposed freestanding signs with property frontage on Highway 515, signs can be maximum 20 feet tall and 100 square feet in size.
- For proposed freestanding signs with property frontage on all other State routes (Hwy 53, Hwy 136, etc.), signs can be maximum 15 feet tall and 50 square feet in size.
- For proposed freestanding signs with property frontage on all local roads (Cove Rd, Hill City Rd, etc.), signs can be maximum 10 feet tall and 32 square feet in size.
All signage on public thoroughfares in Pickens County is subject to regulation by county ordinance. See Pickens County Ordinances: Chapter 4 for details concerning allowable signs.
The one-time charge for a permit is $1.00/square foot with a minimum charge of $25.00. If the sign is “two-sided,” there is a charge for each side.
Prior to erecting any signage, you must have a permit issued by the Office of Planning and Development. An application is available at the Planning and Development Office or Download it Here.

- the size
- a picture or drawing
- and the type of sign [see Ordinance]
